Privacy Policy

StallTrust Australia is a community app that helps Australians find and check roadside honesty stalls. It's free to use, funded by local businesses we call Local Patrons. StallTrust is run from New Zealand by the team behind StallTrust New Zealand. Here's exactly what we do and don't do with your data.
What we collect
- Account info: your name and email address when you sign up.
- Location data: your device's location when you open the map, add or claim a stall, or check in. We use it to show you nearby stalls and to confirm a check-in or claim was made at the stall. We do not track your location in the background.
- Photos: images you upload of stalls. These may include location data to confirm the photo was taken at the stall.
- Reviews and ratings: written reviews, star ratings and trust reports you make about stalls.
- QR / check-in data: records of QR scans and check-ins at stalls, used to confirm a visit was genuine.
- Points and activity: your points, check-in history, and the stalls you've added or claimed.
- Website visits and sign-ups: your rough area (country and region, worked out from your internet connection), how you found us (for example a Facebook ad, a search, or a friend's link), and whether you're on a phone or computer. To tell whether a website visit led to a sign-up, we also keep a scrambled one-way code made from your internet address. The address itself is never stored and can't be worked back out from the code. We use this only to see which of our ads and areas are working.
How we use it
- Show you nearby honesty stalls on the map
- Check that reviews and check-ins come from real visits (via QR and location)
- Work out and display trust scores for stalls from community input
- Award points for your contributions
- Run your account and keep the app working
- Choose which Local Patron card to show you, based on the area you're viewing (see below)
- Keep the community safe by reviewing reports of inappropriate content
Local Patrons (sponsors)
StallTrust is free for everyone and funded by Local Patrons. From time to time the app shows a patron card alongside the stalls. This is advertising, so here's exactly how it works:
- We choose which card to show based on the area you're looking at on the map, so the patron is local to that area.
- We do not build an advertising profile about you, track you across other apps or websites, or use third-party ad networks or tracking tools.
- If you tap a patron card, you're taken to that business's own website. What you do there is covered by their privacy policy, not ours.
- We count anonymous, combined views and taps of patron cards (your IP address is one-way scrambled, never stored as-is) so we can tell a patron how their card performed. This is never tied to your name or account.
What's public
Stalls you add (location, name, what's for sale), photos of stalls, reviews and star ratings, and your display name on reviews are visible to other StallTrust users. Your email address, location history and account details are never shown publicly.
Reporting & moderation
Reviews, photos and stall listings are created by users, so the app lets you report anything you think is inappropriate and hide content you don't want to see. Reports come straight to us and we review them. We may remove content or accounts that break our community rules.
What we DON'T do
- We never sell your personal information to anyone
- We never track your location in the background or when the app is closed
- We don't use third-party advertising networks or behavioural ad tracking
- We don't give a patron anything that identifies you; they only see anonymous, combined numbers
Where your data is stored
Your data is stored on our own servers in New Zealand. That means your information is sent overseas from Australia. New Zealand has its own privacy law (the Privacy Act 2020), and we handle your information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles as well. We use industry-standard security to protect your information in transit and in storage. Our website traffic passes through Cloudflare, and patron payments are handled by Stripe (we never see or store card numbers).
The app saves map and stall data on your device so it works offline. That copy stays on your device and you can clear it any time.
How long we keep it
Your account info and contributions are kept while your account exists. If you delete your account in the app, your personal information is removed. Anonymous stall data and trust scores may be kept so the stall map stays accurate. Payment records for Local Patrons are kept for 7 years, as tax law requires.
Your rights
We follow the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). You can:
- Ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you
- Ask us to correct it
- Delete your account and its personal information yourself in the app, under Profile
- Complain to us, and if you're not happy with our answer, to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC)
Children's privacy
StallTrust is not meant for anyone under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We'll tell you about any significant changes through the app or by email.
